Celebrating Mom

Mom

Whether she gave birth to you, adopted or fostered you, she cared for you when you were sick, tucked you in at night, taught you how to sew on a button and cook an egg, stayed up all night with you when you were sick, stood in the cold and rain at your games, helped you fill out college applications, coached you for your first interview, audition and try out, held you in her arms while you cried from a broken heart, celebrated every triumph with you and picked you up when you fell, she was there for you.

We all have one.

Moms teach us how to love. She is the center of our universe when we are young and the person who drives us completely crazy as we grow up. Sometimes, she is both mom and dad and she just does what is needed to get the job done. At some point in our lives, we realize that her love for her family is what drives her.

She is our touchstone. Having a bad day, call Mom. Don’t know how to cook something, call Mom. Have a question about getting a stain out, a cough that won’t go away, which person to date, when to plant your herbs, how to cook an artichoke, which job to take, or what color to paint your bathroom, call Mom. Somehow, she always knows the answers or knows where you can go to get the right answer.

She would willingly sacrifice her life for her children, if she knew that it would keep them from harm.

Celebrate Mom. Cook her breakfast or take her to brunch. Pick out flowers at the nursery together or send her a bouquet. Call her if she lives far away and let her know that you are thinking about her.

Because she is thinking about you.

To my mom and every mom, I wish you a very Happy Mother’s Day.
