Spring is finally here! I have been anxiously waiting its return. It seems that every year it takes longer to get here. Perhaps it is just my impatience to get back outside. I love sitting outside having my morning coffee listening to the birds and watching the chipmunks run around. I close my eyes and just enjoy the moment. I wake up earlier so I can just sit for a while.
Spring brings a feeling of refreshment and renewal; you can smell it in the air. Trees start budding and flowers start blooming. Everything is new. It is that time of year we throw open the windows and start cleaning out the closets and cupboards purging the things that do not work for us anymore.
It is a great time to start thinking about what is not working in our diets as well. With farmers markets every weekend and the opportunity for fresh fruits and vegetables we can all really take advantage and use it to improve our health.
Taking a step away from the processed foods and moving towards a more natural diet can really improve your physical and mental well-being.
Last year was the first time in my life I grew a vegetable garden. I grew lettuce, spinach, Swiss chard, tomatoes, celery, green onions and cucumbers, along with a host of herbs. I remember seeing celery grow for the first time, my son and I were amazed; neither of us knew how it grew. Watching that little celery grow was a joy, for all of us. Going outside and cutting what I needed for a salad was exhilarating. It was an incredible feeling of empowerment.
Taking a step away from the processed foods and moving towards a more natural way of eating has had a wonderful impact on the health of my family. It is a really positive activity for so many reasons.
If you have a little bit of space you can try growing a few things. Getting outside and working in a garden is a great way to get some exercise and enjoy the outdoors. Even if it is a windowsill full of fresh herbs, I really recommend getting your hands a little dirty this year.
