Be Our Guest!
The days have become shorter and where we live, the temperatures have become cooler. Autumn is upon us and before we know it, the holidays will be here.
Receiving an invitation to attend someone’s holiday meal is always a lovely surprise, but it can also bring a fair amount of worry for those of us living with celiac disease or food sensitivities/allergies. Fortunately, there are ways to relieve that worry that allow you to focus on family and friends, instead of food. Here are some strategies that we have found to ease the stress.
First and foremost, let your host/hostess know that you have allergies/sensitivities. Most hosts will gladly welcome that information and ask what they can do to make you feel comfortable in their home.
Ask your host if you can bring a dish. If you take a dish, along with it’s designated serving utensil, you will know that you can safely eat at least one dish.
A follow up to bringing your own dish, is to eat before you go. A small meal that contains protein before you leave your house is your best defense to being miserable while being surrounded by food that you cannot eat. Make sure to take snacks with you. Nuts and granola are easy to carry and will easily hold you over.
Be gracious, but ask questions. Before dinner, ask your hostess about the dishes being served. If your host is aware of your allergy, he will not mind you asking specific questions. If you are unsure of a dish, do not take any chances. Skip that dish.
Stick with safe foods. Vegetables, fruits and meat are safe in their natural form. Again, ask your host.
In the end, holiday gatherings are truly about family and friends. Prepare before you go, eat only what you know is safe, and enjoy your holidays.
I saw your ad in the February, 2016 issue of Gluten-Free Living. I am very excited for you and for our mutual Celiac friends who seek to live the abundant gluten free life. What a wonderful gift you are giving to this community! Our business, Abundant Life Foods, LLC, is a wholesale manufacturer of Gluten Free dry mixes which we sell on our website and also through a broker to institutional distributors like SYSCO houses across the US. We are in the process of being certified by the Celiac Foundation. We have been gluten free certified by an independent lab for several years, but the Foundation has more restrictive qualifications and we have begun that process. Our gluten free cup-for-cup flour would be especially important for the subscribers who cook from scratch. Our mixes include scone mixes, pancake mixes, pizza crust mix, biscuit mix, cookie mixes, cake mixes, brownie mixes and muffin mixes.
Please check out our website if you think we could be of assistance with your subscribers @ http://www.abundantlifefoods.com .
I am interested in asking if you will have a category for businesses to be listed on your site if they are not retailers?
Thank you very much for this information.
